Texas Declaration of Independence

| Mexico-US Wars

Delegates at the Convention of 1836, meeting at Washington-on-the-Brazos, unanimously adopted a Declaration of Independence modeled on the US Declaration. George Childress was the primary author. The declaration accused the Mexican government of imposing military despotism and denying constitutional rights. Texas formally became the Republic of Texas — though the revolution was still undecided on the battlefield.
