UN Warns Israeli Bombing Puts Tyre UNESCO World Heritage Site 'in Serious Danger'
UN officials warned on May 28 that Israeli bombings are putting the ancient ruins of Tyre (Sur), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 'in serious danger' due to strikes falling very close to the site. Tyre's ancient ruins — including Roman hippodrome, necropolis, and Phoenician remains — have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1984. The UN Security Council's Lebanon monitoring report raised alarm as Israel continued to issue evacuation orders for the city and conduct strikes in its vicinity. The Tyre ruins represent one of the best-preserved examples of ancient Levantine civilization and are irreplaceable. UNESCO Director-General called for all parties to respect protections for cultural heritage under international humanitarian law.
