Israeli Attacks and Disarmament Demands Deepen Internal Lebanese Political Divisions

| Lebanon

Analysts and Lebanese political figures warned that Israel's ongoing military pressure and demands for Hezbollah disarmament were sowing dangerous divisions within Lebanese society and political institutions. Israeli forces had killed more than 5,000 people since October 2023, displaced 1.2 million from southern Lebanon and Beirut suburbs, and systematically destroyed southern towns and villages. The conflict — which intensified on March 2, 2026 following violations of the November 2024 ceasefire — created sharp disagreement among Lebanese politicians and communities over how to respond to Israeli terms. Hezbollah opposed direct talks with Israel while the Aoun-Salam government pursued US-mediated negotiations. Analysts assessed that Israel was deliberately exploiting sectarian tensions, creating 'impossible situations for the Lebanese state' to force acceptance of Israeli terms rather than pursue genuine military disarmament of Hezbollah. Lebanese TV station LBCI provoked social media controversy with a disparaging cartoon targeting Hezbollah, reflecting how the external conflict was inflaming internal tensions.
