Israel Marks 78th Independence Day (Yom HaAtzmaut); Palestinians Barred from Official Ceremonies

| Israel-Palestine

Israel's Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) concluded at nightfall on April 21, 2026 as Yom HaAtzmaut — Israel's 78th Independence Day — began with the ceremonial torchlight ceremony at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Sirens rang across Israel marking the deaths of 25,648 soldiers and terror victims since 1948. Palestinians were notably excluded from official state ceremonies. Al Jazeera documented Palestinian residents being turned away from memorial events, emphasising the chasm in how Israeli and Palestinian communities experience the same dates: for Palestinians, the two days carry the memory of the Nakba, the displacement of 700,000–750,000 Palestinians in 1948, whose 78th anniversary falls on May 15. The joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Ceremony, organized by Combatants for Peace and the Parents Circle-Families Forum, took place separately from official state events. The juxtaposition between official celebrations and ongoing ceasefire violations drew international commentary, with 777 Palestinians killed in Gaza since the October 2025 ceasefire.
