Indian Army Discovers Kargil Intrusion
Indian shepherds and army patrols discovered the Pakistani occupation of Kargil peaks on May 3, 1999. Initial Indian reconnaissance patrols were ambushed and suffered casualties. As the scale of intrusion became clear — over 130 peaks occupied across an 80 km front — India launched Operation Vijay to evict the intruders.
