Tashkent Declaration Ends 1965 War
Indian PM Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pakistani President Ayub Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration on January 10, 1966, mediated by Soviet Premier Kosygin. Both sides agreed to withdraw to pre-war positions, release POWs, and restore diplomatic relations. Shastri died of a heart attack hours after signing. The declaration was criticized in India for not delivering a decisive outcome.
