Board of Peace Envoy Mladenov Warns Gaza Truce Collapse Would Be 'Point of No Return'
Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace's High Representative for Gaza, told the UN Security Council on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 that a collapse of the Gaza ceasefire would represent an irreversible catastrophe: 'There will be no roadmap to return to, there will be no administration to deploy and there will be nothing left on the ground to rebuild. That would be a point of no return for everyone.' He added that 'Gaza does not have another catastrophe left in it.' Mladenov criticized continued Israeli strikes and restrictions on shelter supplies, saying they have not and will not produce Hamas disarmament. Hamas agreed July 30 to a roadmap to surrender weapons to a transitional Palestinian governing authority under supervision of a US-led International Stabilization Force, but Prime Minister Netanyahu has publicly rejected the latest phase of the Trump peace plan, and Israel's deputy UN envoy Jonathan Miller said 'the plan cannot succeed while Hamas remains armed. Disarmament must come first.'
