IDF Strikes Continue Across Central and Southern Gaza on Day 954; Cumulative Death Toll Surpasses 73,800

| Gaza War

Israeli Defense Forces continued near-daily airstrike operations across central and southern Gaza Strip on May 22, 2026 (Day 954 of the conflict, Day 12 of the renewed military campaign following the May 10 security cabinet authorization). Strikes targeted residual Hamas tunnel infrastructure and weapons caches in central Gaza and the Yellow Line buffer zone in the south. The cumulative Palestinian death toll since October 7, 2023 has surpassed 73,800 confirmed killed (Gaza Ministry of Health), with 172,600+ wounded. The OCHA Situation Report data indicates 856 Palestinians were killed and 2,463 wounded during the 212-day ceasefire window (October 10, 2025–May 10, 2026) and further deaths have accumulated since resumed operations on May 11. The UN reports that 94% of Gaza's hospitals are damaged or destroyed; 51% of essential medicines are at zero stock; and the 2026 UN Humanitarian Flash Appeal ($4.1B required) remains only 9.7% funded. IDF Chief of Staff Gen. Eyal Zamir stated that the renewed campaign will continue until Hamas demilitarizes or is destroyed. Since the October 2025 ceasefire broke down, IDF has conducted operations in eastern Rafah, the Yellow Line, Khan Younis, Al-Maghazi, and eastern Gaza City — with ACLED documenting a 35% increase in Israeli attacks since April 2026.
