Inertia Enterprises and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announced on August 25, 2026 a manufacturing breakthrough that cuts the formation time for the cryogenically frozen deuterium-tritium 'ice' fuel layer inside inertial confinement fusion targets from multiple days — as required at the National Ignition Facility — to just two to three hours, with a path to under an hour. Because Inertia's planned 10 MJ laser is substantially less sensitive to fuel-layer imperfections than NIF's 2 MJ system, simulations show the faster layers cost essentially no fusion performance while remaining within NIF's proven ignition design tolerances. LLNL inertial confinement physicist Chris Weber said 'the quality of these rapid ice layers are comparable in many ways to the NIF layers that take much longer to grow,' while NIF deputy director Abbas Nikroo called it 'the most thorough examination of D-T ice layering that I am aware of.' The advance lowers tritium inventory, material-handling, and regulatory costs for Inertia's planned pilot plant, which aims to inject fuel targets several hundred times per minute — a rate incompatible with NIF-style multi-day layering.
