Sisi Meets Libyan Commander Haftar, Reiterates Support for Institutional Unification and Elections

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received Libyan National Army commander Khalifa Haftar in Cairo on August 19, 2026, reaffirming Egypt's support for Libya's territorial unity, the unification of its rival institutions, and the holding of long-delayed presidential and parliamentary elections. The meeting was also attended by LNA Chief of Staff Khaled Haftar, Libya Reconstruction and Development Fund Director Qassem Haftar, and Egyptian General Intelligence Service chief Hassan Rashad. Presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said Sisi welcomed Haftar's visit and underscored the deep, longstanding ties between the two neighboring states.
