Granma Landing — Revolution Begins
Fidel Castro and 81 fighters landed on the southeastern coast of Cuba aboard the yacht Granma. Batista's forces ambushed the group at Alegría de Pío; only 20 survived and fled into the Sierra Maestra mountains, beginning the guerrilla war. The landing date became a national holiday.
