Team Europe Commits €57.8 Million to South African Green Hydrogen and Minerals Projects

| Climate Solutions

At the African Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town on September 15, 2026, the European Union together with Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands ('Team Europe') launched two Global Gateway projects worth more than R1 billion (€57.8 million) to support South Africa's green hydrogen industry and local mineral and battery supply chains. The package, implemented by Germany's GIZ and KfW development agencies with South African development finance institutions, includes a €20.5 million facility aimed at helping green hydrogen and Power-to-X projects reach bankability, plus grants, equity and concessional capital to strengthen policy frameworks and crowd in private investment. EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Sikela said the initiative shows 'how Team Europe, together with South Africa, can create the right conditions for private investors to enter markets with high potential.' The funding is part of a broader Team Europe Global Gateway package for South Africa exceeding R200 billion (~€11.6 billion), and coincided with President Cyril Ramaphosa's government naming the first wave of six priority green hydrogen projects, including a Saldanha Bay sustainable-aviation-fuel project that reached a final investment decision.
