Kast Decrees Preventive Emergency From Arica to Coquimbo Ahead of New Storm System

| Chile

President José Antonio Kast, after chairing a Climate Emergency Committee meeting at La Moneda, decreed a preventive emergency running August 10–16 across the regions between Arica y Parinacota and Coquimbo ahead of an incoming frontal weather system. Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado said the measure activates regional and provincial delegations and pre-coordinates with governors and mayors so resources and response times are ready before impacts on people and infrastructure materialize. The decree came roughly three weeks after a separate storm system killed 13 and left 18 missing across Coquimbo and Atacama in mid-July, prompting the government to move preemptively this time rather than react after the fact.
