Rodrigo Rojas DeNegri Burned Alive by Military Patrol
Rodrigo Rojas DeNegri (19, a Chilean-American photographer) and Carmen Gloria Quintana (18, a student) are doused with gasoline and set on fire by an army patrol during a national protest day in Santiago. Rojas dies four days later; Quintana survives with severe burns. The killings provoke international outrage, particularly in the US Congress (Rojas held US permanent residency). The Reagan administration, despite initially defending Chile, eventually condemns the killings.
