Plebiscite: 'No' Wins 55.99% — Pinochet's Rule to End
The plebiscite on whether Pinochet should continue in power results in 55.99% voting 'No' and 44.01% voting 'Yes', on a 97% voter turnout. Pinochet attempts to ignore the result and declare a state of emergency, but his three fellow junta members refuse to support him. In the early hours of October 6, Pinochet concedes. The result triggers mandatory presidential elections for December 1989. The plebiscite is considered one of the most significant democratic victories in Latin American history.
