Copper Workers Call First National Day of Protest — Mass Movement Begins

| Chile 1970–1990

The Confederation of Copper Workers (CTC) calls Chile's first national day of protest since the 1973 coup. Hundreds of thousands participate across the country through work slowdowns, pot-banging (cacerolazos), and marches. The regime responds with tear gas, water cannon, and live ammunition: 5 people are killed on the day of protest. The protest succeeds in breaking the climate of fear and triggers monthly national protest days that continue for two years.
