1980 Constitution Approved in Fraudulent Plebiscite

| Chile 1970–1990

Pinochet's government holds a plebiscite on a new constitution drafted to guarantee the military's political role and entrench neoliberal economic provisions. The vote is held without electoral registers, in conditions that preclude fair campaigning. Official results claim 67% approval. Opposition parties (still officially banned) and international observers dispute the legitimacy. The constitution, with amendments, remains Chile's fundamental law even after democracy is restored in 1990.
