United States Formally Recognizes Pinochet Junta
The Nixon administration formally recognizes the Pinochet military junta just 13 days after the coup, becoming one of the first governments to do so. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger tells Pinochet: 'We are sympathetic with what you are trying to do here.' The US immediately extends $24 million in food credits that had been withheld from Allende. Recognition grants the junta international legitimacy as the world is still reporting on mass executions.
