Salvador Allende dies inside La Moneda after the military assault. The junta immediately claims he committed suicide with an AK-47 rifle given to him by Fidel Castro. Supporters and family members allege he was assassinated by soldiers who stormed the palace. A 2011 forensic investigation commissioned by Chile's judiciary confirmed death by suicide.
