Víctor Jara Tortured and Executed in National Stadium
Celebrated Chilean folk musician and theater director Víctor Jara is arrested on September 12 at the Technical University of Santiago and taken to the National Stadium. Soldiers break his hands — a symbolic act targeting the guitarist who composed protest songs for Allende's movement. He is tortured repeatedly over five days and shot at least 44 times. His body is found in a Santiago street. His murder becomes an international symbol of the regime's brutality.
