Military Coup Begins at Dawn — Navy Seizes Valparaíso

At 6:00 AM, the Chilean Navy seizes Valparaíso, Chile's main port. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Carabineros act in coordinated nationwide action. Military units take control of radio stations, cut communications, and arrest Popular Unity leaders across the country. The coup is planned by a military junta of four commanders: Pinochet (Army), Leigh (Air Force), Merino (Navy), Mendoza (Carabineros).
