Four Fans Die During World Cup Celebrations Near Ángel de la Independencia

Four people died during and after mass celebrations following Mexico's Round-of-16 victory over Ecuador on the night of June 30–July 1, 2026, as roughly one million fans packed Paseo de la Reforma around the Ángel de la Independencia. CDMX's Secretaría de Salud confirmed three deaths by asphyxiation from crowd entrapment — a 44-year-old man and two women (19 and 48) — found near Lancaster/Hamburgo in Colonia Juárez and at Río Neva/Reforma. A fourth victim, a man in his 20s, died in hospital after a medical emergency initially linked to possible intoxication.
