Brugada Launches 57 km Centro Histórico Illumination Project

| CDMX

Jefa de Gobierno Clara Brugada inaugurated 'Centro Histórico Iluminado,' a sweeping urban renovation covering 57 km of pedestrian corridors, 6,774 new streetlights, 134 streets, and 73,000 m² of illuminated building facades across 41 historic monuments. The project, framed as part of CDMX's World Cup 2026 preparations, is also intended to deter crime, boost tourism, and improve quality of life in the historic core. Brugada simultaneously announced 4,500 new social housing units in the Centro Histórico, aimed at reversing the gentrification that has emptied much of the area's residential population over decades. The illumination covers major corridors including the Zócalo, Madero, 5 de Mayo, Donceles, and República de Brasil streets. CDMX is one of three host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with matches at the Estadio GNP (formerly Estadio Azteca).
