First National Earthquake Drill of 2026 — CDMX Mobilizes 22 Million Residents
At 11:00 local time on May 6, the seismic alert system sounded across Mexico City and surrounding municipalities as part of the first National Earthquake Drill (Simulacro Nacional) of 2026. The hypothetical scenario involved an 8.2-magnitude earthquake in the Guerrero Gap — the same seismic zone responsible for Mexico's most destructive historical earthquakes. Jefa de Gobierno Clara Brugada led the public event at the Monumento a la Revolución, calling the drill 'a collective success' and underscoring CDMX's earthquake preparedness after the dual anniversaries of the 1985 (September 19) and 2017 (September 19) earthquakes. Schools, offices, hospitals, and government buildings across all 16 alcaldías participated. Mexico City's seismic alert network — among the world's most advanced — provides 60–90 seconds of warning for major Guerrero earthquakes. The drill came two days after a real M5.6 Oaxaca earthquake triggered the alert on May 4.
