CDMX Commits 1.2 Billion Pesos to Iztapalapa Flood Infrastructure
Jefa de Gobierno Clara Brugada announced 1.2 billion pesos in dedicated flood mitigation infrastructure investment for Iztapalapa — part of a broader 1.782 billion peso drainage program for all of CDMX in 2026. The Iztapalapa package funds 24 hydraulic works, including: desludging of the Laguna Mayor reservoir, rehabilitation of the El Salado pumping station, construction of a new 1.5 km collector in Colonia Renovación (200 million pesos), and storm retention tanks on Avenida Zaragoza. Iztapalapa's 1.84 million residents are among the most vulnerable to flooding in the capital, owing to the borough's position in the former lakebed at the eastern margin of the historic Lake Texcoco basin. Brugada served as alcaldesa of Iztapalapa from 2018 to 2022, during which she reduced homicides by 60%. The investment follows repeated flooding emergencies in the borough during the 2024 and 2025 rainy seasons.
