Tren Maya Inaugurated — Sections 2–4 Open to Passengers

AMLO led the inaugural run of the Tren Maya on December 15, 2023, with public passenger service beginning on sections 2–4 covering 14 stations including Chichén Itzá, Valladolid, and Cancún Airport. AMLO declared it 'the most important public work in the world.' The train used 42 passenger units designed and assembled in Hidalgo state. Average ridership in the first seven months was just over 1,200 passengers per day — well below government targets. The total project cost had ballooned from the original 150 billion pesos estimate to approximately 500 billion pesos (~$27–30 billion USD).
