Ovidio Guzmán Extradited to the United States
Ovidio Guzmán López was extradited to the United States on September 15, 2023, marking a significant reversal from the 2019 Culiacanazo when Mexico released him under cartel pressure. He was transferred to face federal drug trafficking charges filed in Chicago, Illinois. In a subsequent plea agreement, Guzmán admitted to overseeing production and smuggling of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana, and fentanyl on a massive scale, and admitted to systematically bribing Mexican government officials at multiple levels. The extradition represented one of AMLO's most significant security deliverables to the United States.
