Federal Police Formally Dissolved — National Guard Takes Over

On December 31, 2019, the Federal Police (PF) was formally dissolved after 20 years of operation, and the National Guard officially assumed all federal policing functions. The dissolution had been announced in October 2019 after the National Guard was fully operational. Thousands of Federal Police officers were offered transfers to the National Guard, the Army, or the Navy. Unions and officers protested, arguing the transition was mishandled, with many lacking clear assignments.
