National 'Jornada de Sana Distancia' Lockdown Declared
A national lockdown (Jornada Nacional de Sana Distancia) was declared March 30, 2020, after non-essential activities were suspended March 26. Crucially, no enforcement of movement restrictions was imposed — the lockdown was advisory only. The national health authority did not recommend face masks for the general population through late June 2020. Mexico's per-capita testing rate was among the lowest in the Americas (17 tests/1,000 people). The economy contracted 18.9% in Q2 2020 year-on-year. By year-end Mexico ranked among the top 5 countries globally by absolute COVID-19 death count.
