Soviet Union Declares War on Japan — Manchuria Invaded

The USSR declared war on Japan and launched Operation August Storm, a massive invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria with 1.5 million troops. Within days, Soviet forces shattered the Kwantung Army, Japan's largest overseas force. This Soviet entry, combined with the atomic bombs, convinced Japan's Supreme War Council that continuing the war was hopeless.
