Japan Surrenders — V-J Day
Emperor Hirohito broadcast his surrender announcement to the Japanese people — the first time most had heard his voice. The formal surrender was signed aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2. The Pacific War had lasted 1,347 days from Pearl Harbor and cost approximately 36 million lives across the Asia-Pacific region.
