United Nations Charter Signed in San Francisco
Representatives of 50 nations signed the UN Charter in San Francisco, creating the United Nations as the primary international organization for maintaining peace and security. The Charter created the Security Council with five permanent members (US, UK, USSR, France, China) holding veto power. The UN formally came into existence on October 24, 1945.
