President Roosevelt Dies — Truman Assumes Presidency
President Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage at Warm Springs, Georgia, just three weeks before Germany's surrender. He had served as president through the entire US involvement in WWII. Vice President Harry S. Truman was sworn in and would make the fateful decision to use atomic bombs against Japan.
