Battle of Okinawa — Bloodiest Pacific Battle

The last major battle of the Pacific War, Okinawa involved 287,000 US troops assaulting an island defended by 100,000 Japanese. The 82-day campaign produced catastrophic casualties: 12,000 US dead, 70,000+ wounded, 100,000+ Japanese military dead, and an estimated 100,000–150,000 Okinawan civilian dead. Kamikaze attacks sank 36 US ships.
