Soviet Forces Liberate Auschwitz-Birkenau

Soldiers of the Soviet 60th Army liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp complex, finding 7,000 surviving prisoners amid evidence of mass murder on an industrial scale. Over 1.1 million people, predominantly Jews, had been murdered at Auschwitz. January 27 is now designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day by the United Nations.
