D-Day — Allied Invasion of Normandy

Operation Overlord launched the largest amphibious invasion in history: 156,000 Allied troops landed on five Normandy beaches under massive naval and air support. American forces suffered heavy losses at Omaha Beach; other beaches were secured more quickly. The Normandy landings opened the long-awaited second front in Western Europe and began the liberation of France.
