Tehran Conference — 'Big Three' Confirm Overlord for 1944

| World War II

The first meeting of the 'Big Three' — Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin — took place in Tehran, Iran. The three leaders confirmed that Operation Overlord (the cross-Channel invasion of France) would be launched in May 1944, coordinated with a Soviet summer offensive. Stalin promised to declare war on Japan within three months of Germany's defeat. The conference also discussed the post-war reorganization of Europe, foreshadowing the division between Soviet and Western spheres of influence. Roosevelt attempted to use his personal charm to manage Stalin, sometimes at Churchill's expense.
