Brusilov Offensive Launched

| World War I

Russian General Aleksei Brusilov launched the most successful Allied offensive of the war against the Austro-Hungarian and German armies on the Eastern Front. Breaking with conventional tactics, Brusilov attacked simultaneously on a 300-mile front, preventing the enemy from concentrating reserves. The offensive resulted in over 1.5 million Austro-Hungarian and German casualties and the capture of over 400,000 prisoners. It shattered the Austro-Hungarian army as a fighting force, but exhausted Russia's reserves.
