Battle of Jutland
The largest naval battle in history pitted the British Grand Fleet (151 warships) against the German High Seas Fleet (99 warships) in the North Sea off Denmark. Britain lost 14 ships including three battlecruisers; Germany lost 11 ships. Germany's fleet escaped back to port and never again challenged British naval supremacy. Both sides claimed victory: Germany had sunk more tonnage, Britain retained control of the seas. The German fleet spent the rest of the war confined to port.
