First Battle of Ypres
The First Battle of Ypres was a series of engagements fought around the Belgian city of Ypres as both sides attempted to outflank one another. The BEF and Allied forces successfully held the Ypres Salient against determined German attacks, but at enormous cost. Germany's Kindermord bei Ypern ('Massacre of the Innocents at Ypres') involved newly raised volunteer regiments advancing in close formation and suffering catastrophic losses. The battle ended the war of movement on the Western Front.
