Race to the Sea

| World War I

After the Marne, both sides attempted to outflank each other to the north in a series of engagements known as the Race to the Sea. Each attempt to turn the enemy's open flank was countered, extending the front northward from the Aisne River to the English Channel coast. By mid-October the front was continuous from Switzerland to the sea, creating the Western Front that would remain essentially stable for four years.
