Germany Invades Neutral Belgium

| World War I

German forces crossed into neutral Belgium, violating the 1839 Treaty of London that guaranteed Belgian neutrality. The invasion shocked international opinion and provided Britain with a clear casus belli. German Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg dismissed the Treaty of London as a 'scrap of paper,' a phrase that became infamous Allied propaganda. Belgium's King Albert I called on treaty guarantors for assistance.
