Germany Declares War on France
Germany declared war on France after France refused to remain neutral in a Russo-German war. Germany fabricated a pretext claiming French aircraft had bombed Nuremberg. The declaration cleared the way for implementation of the Schlieffen Plan, which called for a massive sweep through Belgium and northern France to encircle Paris from the west.
