Britain Declares War on Germany

| World War I

Britain declared war on Germany at 11 PM (midnight Berlin time) following Germany's invasion of Belgium. Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey addressed the House of Commons, delivering his famous lament: 'The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.' The British Empire, encompassing a quarter of the world's population, was now at war.
