FIFA Bans Three Argentina Players Over World Cup Final Scuffle With Spain

FIFA's Disciplinary Committee handed down sanctions against Argentina over the post-match altercation with Spanish players following the July 19 final, resolving the case opened July 29. Midfielder Leandro Paredes — who grabbed Spain's Eric García by the throat and shoved Gavi to the ground — received a 10-match ban and $90,000 fine; defender Nahuel Molina was banned seven matches and fined $90,000; substitute Thiago Almada received a one-match ban and $30,000 fine; assistant coach Roberto Ayala was banned three matches and fined $30,000. Spain's Gavi was also handed a one-match ban and $30,000 fine. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was fined a combined $321,000 and ordered to play its next two home matches at 50% stadium capacity. The ruling was separate from FIFA's ongoing case against Argentina over the 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas' banner displayed after the July 15 semifinal.
