Negotiations in Washington broke down late Friday night, minutes before the 12:01am ET Saturday deadline, ending days of talks that Trump had called 'pretty much' a deal just hours earlier. PM Carney suspended negotiations and recalled Canada's negotiating team to Ottawa, saying the US had proposed new terms in recent days that were 'uneconomic, unfair and undermined the net benefits for Canada' — including restrictions on Canada's ability to pursue independent trade deals and provisions touching French-language subsidies and bilingual labeling.
