Haiti: Aristide Removed in US-Facilitated Coup
On February 29, 2004, US Marines and diplomatic personnel pressured President Aristide to leave Haiti as armed rebels (including former FRAPH members) advanced on Port-au-Prince. Aristide later claimed he was kidnapped and forced onto a US plane to the Central African Republic. The US, France, and Canada denied this account. The US deployed 2,000 troops and helped install an interim government, effectively ending Aristide's presidency.
