Pinochet Arrested in London: International Justice Reaches Dictators

| US-LatAm Interventions

Former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was arrested in London on October 16, 1998, based on a Spanish extradition request for torture and crimes against humanity. The arrest was a watershed moment for international human rights law. Pinochet was ultimately returned to Chile in 2000 on health grounds. He died in 2006 under house arrest facing 300 criminal charges. The arrest prompted accelerated declassification of US Chile documents.
