El Salvador Peace Accords End 12-Year Civil War

| US-LatAm Interventions

The Chapultepec Peace Accords were signed on January 16, 1992, ending El Salvador's civil war, which had killed 75,000 people over 12 years. The UN Truth Commission (1993) attributed 85% of human rights violations to government forces and US-backed death squads. The accords required dissolution of the Atlacatl Battalion and other units with human rights records. The US had provided $6 billion in military and economic aid to El Salvador during the conflict.
