Cubana Flight 455: CIA-Trained Exiles Bomb Cuban Airliner
CIA-trained Cuban exile Luis Posada Carriles orchestrated the bombing of Cubana de Aviación Flight 455 on October 6, 1976, killing all 73 people aboard—including Cuba's national fencing team. Posada escaped from Venezuelan prison in 1985 with alleged CIA help. Despite Venezuelan and Cuban extradition requests, Posada lived freely in Miami until his 2018 death—representing one of the starkest examples of selective US counterterrorism policy.
